What's happening this week: May 27 - June 3

Join us this Sunday, May 27, at 10:30 am for a service entitled Serving With Grace with the Rev. Diane Rollert  and music by Sandra Hunt, our music director.
During the month of May, all unidentified money in the collection baskets will be donated to L'Abri en Ville which provides a stable and fulfilling environment for persons with a mental illness through safe, affordable housing and inclusion in a supportive community.
There will be a special collection today will be donated to the Canadian Unitarian Council's fund for Sharing Our Faith grants. Once a year, congregations are encouraged to hold a worship service focused on the UU faith in Canada. The funds collected are then given out in grants that support growth projects in congregations.  Read on for more activities happening this week.

Happy long weekend! Kick back, relax and enjoy. Join us this Sunday, May 20, at 10:30 am for "Learning from Walking the Shamanic Path," a service by Deirdre McCay. Our special musical guest will be Archie Martin.
There will be an All Ages Children's Chapel program with a lesson and games based on the Celtic wheel of the year. The first two Sundays in June will be our last children's choir meetings for this year.

Happy Mother's Day and other happenings this week, May 13-20

Everything Possible. A service with a child dedication, beautiful music by Parts in Peace Choir and pianist Sandra Hunt. And our children's choir will sing during the chalice lighting. Lunch of sandwiches and sweets after the service. This Sunday, May 13 at 10:30. Everyone is welcome. So if you've never had a chance to visit our community, to explore what we're all about, why not this Sunday? Kick off this week, May 6 - 13, with some rabble-rousing music!

You've probably never heard this in church before: a subversive, pro-gay, feminist, secular, old-time, rabble-rousing, barn-burning gospel music band. So come check out the Irreverand James and the Critical Mass Choir  this Sunday, May 6 at 10:30 a.m. The service, entitled Rainbow in the Sky, will be followed by a lunch (donations appreciated). And as we do on every first Sunday of the month, we'll be collecting non-perishable food items for the NDG Food Depot.

What's happening this week: April 29 - May 6

Join us this Sunday, April 29, at 10:30 am for a service in French, entitled Amour et communauté /Love and Community by Rev. Diane Rollert et Alain-Pierre Bachecongi.  

Music will be provided by Sandra Hunt on piano, et Geneviève Demers, soprano. Children aged 5 to 12 will join Julie Richard in the Children's Chapel to focus on two UU principles -- ''everyone is unique'' and ''respect for nature."  Julie would like the children to come ready to talk about a favourite animal and to tell us why their chosen animal is unique, essential, amazing. So come prepared! Everyone is welcome.

During the month of April, all unidentified money in the collection baskets will be donated to Chez Doris, a non-profit organization with a mission to welcome women in difficulty by offering social services, educational and recreational activities as well as professional services in a safe and comforting environment.

What's happening this week: April 22-29

Join us this Sunday, at 10:30 a.m. for our multi-generational service for Earth Day. Our director of religious education, Caroline Balderston Parry and Rev. Diane Rollert, along with the children, will lead a service entitled Out of the Stars Have We Come. Music Director Sandra Hunt and the Parts in Peace Choir will provide the music. Children who are serving as greeters or are singing in the choir should arrive at 10 a.m. There will be seeds to take home and a potluck lunch following the service. A voluntary simplicty course will also start Sunday and there'll be an afternoon concert to benefit the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Read on for more activities this week.

What's Happening the week of April 8 to 15

Celebrate Easter with us this Sunday. And celebrate the return of Rev. Diane Rollert from her sabbatical leave spent with Unitarian Universalist congregations in the Philippines. And next Saturday, April 14 plan to come to Empty Bowls - A Fundaraiser to Fight Hunger in Montreal. Admission is $20 for one serving of soup, bread and a handmade bowl that's yours to keep. And check out Soul Collage with Caroline that day too! So many ways to celebrate Spring!

What's happening this week April 1 - 8

Join us this Sunday, April 1 at 10:30 for the last service with our sabbatical minister, Rev. Carole Martignacco. Her sermon will be entitled Turning Tables; music by Sandra Hunt. Children's choir practice from 10-10:25, followed by singing during the chalice lighting. Join us after the service for a farewell lunch to Carole. Next Sunday, Rev. Diane Rollert returns from her sabbatical in the Philippines.

This this is the first Sunday of the month, please bring non-perishable food items to share with the NDG Food Depot.

Join us this Sunday, March 25, at 10:30 am for a sermon entitled Expanding Our Worldview by Reverend Carole Martignacco. Liturgist will be Shoshanna Green and music by Sandra Hunt and the Yellow Door Choir, directed by Eleanor Stubley. After the time for all ages, children in religious education will hear a story about a famous Unitarian Universalist heroine, Beatrix Potter, led by Eliza Moore. After the service join us for our in-house open house to learn about all the groups, committees and events that make us what we are - a dynamic community!

What is Your Calling? Join us this Sunday, February 26 for a sermon by Rev. Carole Martignacco. Music by Sandra Hunt and the Parts in Peace Choir. The service begins at 10:30 a.m. Childcare is provided. No matter what your beliefs, everyone is welcome. And this being 'Leap Year Day,' we'll be holding a special Teddy Bear's Picnic in the Children's Chapel. Bring your teddy bears and some pennies to donate to a worthy charity. After the service, join us for soup, main course and dessert, with all donations going to cover the UCM's annual membership fees ($1 per member) to Canadian Unitarians for Social Justice. Homemade Seville marmalade will also be for sale. Any surplus funds will go to our school lunch project, Appetite for Learning, in the Léogane area of Haiti.

Because our theme is "Celebrate the Dark," we are asking the children to wear dark clothing if possible.

What's happening this week: Dec. 11-18

Join us this Sunday, Dec. 11, the day after Human Rights Day, as we welcome special guest Flora Terah, a former parliamentary candidate in Kenyan elections in 2007, who was attacked and tortured by a gang of men warning her against running for office. Her son was murdered in March 2008 and her story became a case study for Amnesty International on the state of the world's human rights. The service, entitled We, the Global Village: One Kenyan's Story, begins at 10:30. Music provided by Sandra Hunt.
On Tuesday, the Carmina Choir will hold a special Christmas concert in the Sanctuary.
During the month of December, all unidentified cash in the collection baskets will be given to the Montreal Diet Dispensary which annually provides nutrition and moral support to two thousand women in need during their pregnancy and during the first months after the birth of the baby. During the month of December, all unidentified cash in the collection baskets will be given to the Montreal Diet Dispensary which annually provides nutrition and moral support to 2,000 women in need during their pregnancy and during the first months after the birth of the baby.

This Sunday, November 27, lay chaplain Nicoline Geurrier will deliver a sermon entitled Spiritual Legacies. Our talented pianist and choir director, Sandra Hunt, will provide the music. Service begins at 10:30 a.m.
Children in Spirit Play classes will learn about another Unitarian Universalist heroine today. Join us after the service for a bowl of chowder and home-baked rolls, followed by delicious desserts. L'Abri en Ville will be selling Christmas cards (yes, it is that time again!) Don't forget the congregational budget meeting that begins at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Sanctuary.
During the month of November, all unidentified cash in the collection will be given to St. Michael's Mission (in the church with the red roof), providing assistance, clothing and food to a multilingual and multi-cultural clientele in Montreal's downtown core. What's Happening This Week: Nov. 20 - 27

Should Unitarian Universalists Save Jesus? Come and find out at our service, this Sunday, Nov. 20, when Rev. Diane Rollert will ponder this intriguing question. The amazing Yellow Door Choir, under the direction of Eleanor Stubley, will be our special musical guests, with Perri Lo on piano. 

After the service, pick up some Christmas cards or hasty notes from l'Abri en Ville, which provides affordable housing and support to people with serious mental illness. During the month of November, all unidentified cash in the collection will be given to St. Michael's Mission, providing assistance, clothing and food to a multilingual and multicultural clientele in Montreal's downtown core.

And don't miss the Women's Winter Wonderland Exchange Party this Thursday, N0v. 24 at 5:30 in aid of Elizabeth House Foundation. Bring along no more than 4 items of clothes or accessories that you no longer need and find some new-to-you items for your wardrobe and/or a gift for someone on your Christmas list.

Faith to Change the World Among Events this Week: Nov. 13-20

Worried about the state of our planet? Join us this Sunday, Nov. 13 for a sermon entitled A Faith to Change the World. Bruce Knotts, Executive Director of the Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office, will speak, along with our minister, Rev. Diane Rollert. Music will be provided by pianist Sandra Hunt and the UCM Children's Choir. Stick around after the service for a Baltic Brunch - borscht, sweet cheery soup, pierogies with sour cream, poached salmon on rye and cabbage salad. If you still have room, cheesecake muffins for dessert. Donations appreciated to fund future food activities.

children's costume procession. Service begins at 10:30 and will be followed by a Witches 'n Warlocks Lunch. Rev. Diane Rollert will serve the soup of her choice: tomato/basil, leek and potato, or three sisters' stew, served with home-baked bread. Desserts include pumpkin pies, cheesecake truffles and fresh fruit. Sing along as Louis Halperin plays a scary Hallowe'en tune. Donations appreciated.

Happy Diwali! Join us this Sunday, October 23, at 10:30 am as we welcome special guest Divya, a classical Indian dancer from Infusion Dance. The sermon, entitled Abundance and Light, will be delivered by Rev. Diane Rollert. Music provided by the very talented Jean Séguin. Continuing the Hindu theme, the hospitality committee will offer a complimentary East Indian lunch following the service. Warm up with some tandoori chicken, chickpea curry, lime coconut dahl, raita, salad, rice and naan bread, followed by fruit.
And this Sunday will be the last day to sign your children up for Religious Education classes.

The first of three sessions entitled the ABCs of Palliative Care will also begin today in the sanctuary from 1 - 3 p.m.

Please join us this Sunday, Sept. 25, at 10:30 am for a sermon entitled The Devil Made Me Do It (intriguing, no?) by Rev. Diane Rollert (not comedian Flip Wilson, who coined that phrase, of course). Beautiful music will be provided by the very talented pianist Sandra Hunt.
During the month of September, all unidentified cash in the collection baskets will be donated to Action Communiterre, working with other community activists to address issues of poverty, food security and the environment. What's happening this week: Sept. 11-18

Whether you stayed home or traveled far this summer, bring along a sample of water to our service this Sunday, Sept. 11 that represents a summer experience to share in our annual homecoming ritual. City officials insist that you boil anything from a stream, lake or pond etc. Service begins at 10:30.
Beautiful music provided by Sandra Hunt, piano and choir direction, with Parts in Peace Choir and The Greater Goods (Jessica Burpee, Ann Cascarano, Margo Ellis and Shawn Dohring. A pancake brunch will be served after the service, and donations appreciated. Also, register your child(ren) for Religious Education.

What's happening this week: Sept. 4 -11

After a lazy, hot summer, another crazy fall season begins...
Welcome to our active congregation! If you've never visited us, read on to discover some of the activities we offer - everything from religious education for children to choirs for aspiring singers. If you already know about us, maybe you'd like to try something new this fall, like the Drumming Circle? And be sure to come to the Sept. 11 water communion service at 10:30 and bring a sample of water representing an experience from your summer. We'll have a pancake brunch afterward! We welcome everyone, no matter your beliefs or background.

What's on this week and next: June 19 - July 3

This Sunday, July 3rd, join us for our first summer service led by Abram Friedland: Candide: his way to help the planet .  Please note that we will not have a service on July 10 but people are welcome and encouraged to attend the North Hatley picnic and service that day. What's on this week: June 12-19

Join us this Sunday, June 12, at 10:30 a.m. for Rev. Diane Rollert's talk with the intriguing title: God's Problem. Music provided by pianist Sandra Hunt and JAMS (Jessica Burpee, Ann Cascarano, Margo Ellis and Shawn Dohring). This is also New Member Sunday, so if you are interested in joining our community, contact Petrina Lee Poy. For the final religious education class of the season, all children will meet in the chapel to hear a story about an African boy and his "galimoto," a recycled wire push toy. Make one yourself, while learning more about how our funds for books for children in Uganda are being used. 
After the service, we'll hold a potluck lunch and improv by the Playback Theatre troupe. Tell a story and have it played back to you on the spot! Children are welcome (child care also available). Chef Shawn will be making his tantalizing tandoori chicken. Ice cream cones will be served for dessert. Please note that Claremont Avenue will be closed from 8:40 am to 1:00 pm on Sunday, June 5, to accommodate the Tour de l'Île cyclists. This Sunday we'll have a flower communion at our 10:30 service - please bring a flower to exchange with others. The service, entitled Transitions, will be led by Rev. Diane Rollert with Lay Chaplains Nicoline Guerrier, Ann Beer and Shoshanna Green. Music by Parts in Peace Choir led by Sandra Hunt. And since this is the first Sunday of the month, please bring something to give to the NDG Food Depot. Lots of other things happening this week, including our Annual General Meeting on Monday, June 6 at 7 pm, so read on.

Rollert's thought-provoking lecture on Friday evening to entertaining choir concert on Saturday night to Sunday afternoon's concert by Sandra Hunt, Vanessa Russell and Mattew Russell. What's going on this week: May 22-29

Join us this Sunday, May 22 at 10:30 for a service entitled The Spirit of Life at Work, with guest speaker Michelle Holliday and musicians Marie-France Boisvert, Emilia Córdoba, soprano, and Alexandre Brault, guitar. Childcare available. Religious Education classes will meet together in the Children's Chapel to make cloth flowers and May baskets and play some Victorian games in honour of Victoria Day. This Sunday after our 10:30 service, there'll be an information session about L'Abri en Ville, a local organization which provides a stable and fulfilling environment for people with a mental illness through safe, affordable housing and inclusion in a supportive community. On Monday, May 16, at 7 pm, author, Jewish Quaker and peace activist, Maxine Kaufman-Lacusta, will speak about her book Refusing to Be Enemies:  Palestinian and Israeli Nonviolent Resistance to the Israeli Occupation at Centre Ecumenism, 1819 boul. René Lévesque (Guy/Concordia métro). This event is co-sponsored by the UCM Social & Environmental Concerns Committee, the Montreal Friends Meeting, and the Montreal Dialogue Group. Join us on Mother's Day, this Sunday, May 8, at 10:30 am when our special guest, The Very Reverend Michael J. Pitts (former Dean of Christ Church Cathedral) will deliver a sermon entitled, How Could We Sing the Lord's Song in a Foreign Land? Our wonderful pianist, Sandra Hunt, will provide the music. Religious Education will hold their annual leaders' and helpers' appreciation ceremony during the Time for All Ages. Please be there to receive and/or give thanks! We'll have home-baked muffins after the service.

Say good bye to the rainy, cold weather and join us Sunday, May 1, at 10:30 am for a May Day multigenerational celebration. Please bring non-perishable food items to share with the NDG Food Depot. Don't miss the opening of our "Stairwell Art Gallery" May 6 with photographs by Joshua Radu. Join us at 6 pm for a potluck dinner, or from 7-9 for wine and cheese. Join us this Easter Sunday, April 24 at 9:30 a.m. (before the service) for a pancake breakfast. Donations appreciated. Stay for the service to hear Rev. Diane Rollert's reflection for Easter, and enjoy music provided by Sandra Hunt on the piano and Matthew Russell on the trombone. At 11:45, we'll hold an Easter Communion for those who wish to participate. On Friday, April 29, don't miss Awakening:  A Labyrinth Cantata, the soul-warming, spiritual work of Saskatchewan composer, Angelene Tysseland (1961-2010), who used texts from a wide range of sources. Join us this Sunday, April 10 as we welcome special guest, Dr. Micahel Doxtater, professor of Native studies at McGill University for  a sermon entitled Healing the Generations of the Earth. Talented pianist Emanuel Freitas will provide the music. Service starts at 10:30. Stay afterward for a bowl of soup and bread, served in a hand-crafted bowl - all donations go to Empty Bowls, an initiative to help local organizations feed the hungry in our communities. This Sunday, April 3, Ysaye Barnwell, with members of the 'Building a Vocal Community' workshop, will join us for a morning of inspirational song in the African-American tradition. Come early. We expect a full house. After the service, our hospitality committee will serve Mulligatawny soup & vegetable pakoras with three sauces, tropical sherbert in cones and truffles. Donations appreciated.
